The Northern NPP Concerned Youth group, representing young supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) from the Northern Region, has issued a strong statement condemning what they describe as biased and one-sided advocacy for the selection of the party’s vice-presidential candidate for the upcoming 2024 Presidential Elections.
The group expressed its concerns over the apparent preference for a specific candidate to be chosen as the running mate to the NPP’s flagbearer, H.E. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who is celebrated for being the first Northerner to lead the party into a presidential election.
They noted that various factions within the region have been pushing for their preferred candidate, sidelining the broader goal of supporting Dr. Bawumia’s candidacy and vision for Ghana.
Highlighting the significance of Dr. Bawumia’s election as a momentous achievement for Northerners, the youth group stressed the importance of remaining neutral and allowing the flagbearer adequate time to select a suitable running mate without undue pressure.
They argue that the focus should be on promoting unity, peace, and the party’s progress in the region and across Ghana, rather than on divisive lobbying for specific candidates.
The leadership of the Northern NPP Concern Youth group, drawing members from all 18 constituencies in the Northern Region, called on their fellow Northerners and party supporters to prioritize the collective interest over personal ambitions.
They emphasized the need for actions that would not create division within the party or detract from the achievements and policies of the NPP under the Nana/Bawumia administration.
In their statement, the group appealed to those advocating for individual candidates to redirect their efforts towards supporting the flagbearer’s vision and the party’s development agenda, aiming for a resounding victory in the 2024 elections.
They firmly opposed any one-sided declarations for the running mate position, advocating for a fair and equitable approach in the selection process.
