Barring any last minute hitch, the National Liberation Council will hit the streets of Tamale on Saturday[March 2], for a peaceful protest against Fifi Kwetey, the General Secretary of the NDC for alleged derogatory comments he made against Northerners during a recent visit to the Northern Region.
The Chief scribe of the largest opposition party, earlier this month, accompanied Former President Mahama to the region for a campaign tour. He is alleged in one of his speeches to have described the NPP government as one that has performed woefully and labelled current Vice President and Flagbearer of the ruling party as a disgrace to Northerners.
The Leader of the NLC, Stephen Atubiga, has not taken lightly to the comment and has since started a crusade to get the General Secretary to retract and apologise to all persons of Northern extraction. Addressing a Press Conference today in Tamale, Mr. Atubiga described Fiifi’s comment as disrespectful, demeaning, tribalistic and called on all well meaningful Northerners to condemn the pronouncement.
Mr. Atubiga alleged that the former Agriculture Minister has always demonstrated hatred for Northerners and it became heightened after he was overlooked for the running mate position by John Dramani Mahama prior to the 2020 elections.
Mr. Atugiba said past governments had successes and failures and nobody including Mr. Fiifi Kwetey ever described the leaders of the governments as disgraceful to the tribes or areas they come from. He also added that Dr. Mahamud Bawumia is held in high esteem for some of the transformational policies he has spearheaded and anyone who describes him as failure should not be allowed to go scot-free.
Speaking on the protest, the NLC leader said the aim was to register displeasure against Fiifi Kwetey for the derogatory comments and ask for apology and possible dismissal from his position by the leadership of the NDC, especially if he refuses to adhere to the demands.
