World Bank Vice President Ousman Diagana Commends Ghana SOCO Project

Ousman Diagana, the World Bank Vice President for Western and Central Africa, has commended the Ghana SOCO project, Implemented by the Ministry of Local Government and funded by World Bank for the successful projects they have initiated and completed.

During his visit to various beneficiary countries of the SOCO, Ousman expressed particular admiration for the developments made in Ghana.”Frankly, if I compare what I heard in this conversation to Côte d’Ivoire, Benin, and Togo, congratulations,” he stated, highlighting the impressive progress made under the Ghana SOCO initiative.

Despite acknowledging the significant improvements in the lives of those in beneficiary countries, Ousman pointed out ongoing challenges, particularly related to climate change and conflict.

He reaffirmed the project’s commitment to enhancing collaboration and socio-economic resilience in border -zone communities across Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, and Togo.

The World Bank Vice President pledged continued funding to address existing challenges and support the project’s objectives.

Samuel Seth Passah, Chief Director of the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, described the SOCO project as a “game changer” that has transformed many lives and livelihoods, particularly addressing issues concerning the youth and fostering local economic development.

He emphasized that, according to the Local Government Act, section (12) the responsibilities of local authorities is to promote the local economy, and the SOCO initiative aligns perfectly with this mandate.

He called for increased funding to expand the project’s reach to more communities and expressed the Ministry’s commitment to implementing SOCO effectively to achieve its objectives.

Passah also extended gratitude to the World Bank and other stakeholders for their collaboration in bringing the SOCO projects to fruition.

Mr. Mumuni Damma, the Northern Regional Coordinating Director, noted that the Northern Region has significantly benefited from the SOCO project, especially through the construction and rehabilitation of health centers, schools, and markets to replace dilapidated structures.

He acknowledged the contributions of the immediate past Northern Regional Minister in commissioning several completed projects under SOCO.

Damma also revealed that non-beneficiary communities have expressed feelings of discrimination and made a passionate appeal to Vice President Diagana to consider increasing funding to cover more Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs).

Throughout the discussions, key stakeholders and beneficiary communities shared their excitement and articulated the positive contributions made by the SOCO project.

However, they collectively reiterated the need for more funds to address outstanding challenges.

During his visit, Diagana, along with the World Bank Country Director, officials from the Ministry of Local Government, SOCO representatives, and other key stakeholders, toured completed project sites in the Northern Region.

In a related development, the team also paid a courtesy call on the Paramount Chief of Sagnarigu, His Royal Highness, Sagnari Naa, who praised the SOCO project for complementing government efforts to improve the lives of residents.
